Dr. Karin Crowhurst
About me: I grew up in western Canada (Calgary and Vancouver) but travelled east to pursue my university degrees. During undergrad (at Queen’s University) I met my future husband and entertained myself by making contact explosives. I continued my education at the University of Toronto where I completed my PhD in Biochemistry and Biomolecular Structure in the Forman-Kay lab before moving to Los Angeles in 2003 to join the Mayo lab at Caltech for my postdoc. I joined CSUN as an Assistant Professor in 2007. Since then my students and I have worked hard to move our research forward, and create a fun and inclusive lab environment. Other interests: I have been a radio DJ in my past and in rare periods of spare time these days I like to make stuff and go exploring (locally and globally). I also have a garden and grow amazing tomatoes and berries and veggies in the summer.

About me: I’m a first year undergraduate student and I’ve always been interested in the world of science, and more recently the world of biochemistry. I joined this lab because I’ve always had a great curiosity for our understanding of life. Even though we’ve only been around for a tiny percentage of earth’s history, I would like to contribute to our exponential growth of knowledge that we’ve been able to accomplish. I thought starting off here would be a great start for my career in science and I look forward to being in the lab. I currently work as a CNA in the healthcare field and I’m hoping to pursue a career in medicine in the future. Other interests: I enjoy skateboarding, going to the gym, traveling, and playing/writing music.

Joined as grad student: fall 2024 About me: I discovered my interest in research through an NSF funded research opportunity for community college students in 2020 where I worked in a materials lab at UCLA. I completed a B.S Biochemistry in 2024 at CSUN (during which I did research in the Crowhurst lab) and joined the Master’s program the following semester. Other interests: Music, hiking, reading.

About me: I’m originally from the San Fernando Valley. I transferred from Los Angeles Mission College to CSUN where I get the chance to learn more about the vibrant aspects of our microscopic ecosystems. I was introduced to research through the Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research (U-RISE) program which has allowed me to dive deeper into the molecular mechanisms bacteria use to evade our immune systems. Upon graduating I plan to pursue a PhD in Microbiology or go into industry. Other interests: I enjoy gardening (my favorite plant is my aloe plant named Aloever) and spending time with cat Alma.

Joined as grad student: summer 2024 About me: What I like about doing research is the NMR peak assigning, it reminds me of a jigsaw puzzle and I find it fun and it can be somewhat relaxing when you get in the “flow-state”. Other interests: My favorite things to do in my free time are painting, going to thrift shops, and baking. I prefer walking everywhere because I can appreciate nature and do some people-watching.

About me: I first came to the States to pursue a bachelor’s degree, and now it’s the time for me to dive deeper. I grew up in China, and thanks to my parents, I’ve had great interest in science since I was a little kid. “Why am I here? How was I born?” these questions have echoed in my head over years. My dad is a chemical engineering professor, and my mom is a doctor. I, as a biochemist, am a combination of them! Also, I feel so honored to join this superb lab with fantastic people. Other interests: I like to build plastic models (and LEGOs too) and travel. I’ve been to so many places around the world. I also like to draw, but each drawing takes me months to finish.

About me:I am a first-generation college graduate, and proud of it. While it was not always easy to continue school, my family has always motivated me to continue to pursue my goals and my dreams. I desire to make my science dreams a reality to show myself, my family and all those who dream similar dreams that anyone can pave new roads no matter what our starting materials may be. Other interests: I love watching sports and going fishing. The Master’s program has nurtured my latest hobby… napping 🙂
